There’s Karjat, and then there’s Karjat with mood lighting.

Because tucked into its lushest, leafiest corner sits something you don’t expect in a weekend destination known for waterfalls and accidental group trips — a full-blown design fantasy, layered in brass, paint, storytelling, and unapologetic excess. It’s called Peacock Life, and it’s the newly revamped design destination by interior designer Shabnam Gupta.

And no, it’s not just a store. It’s a curated space designed to showcase how diverse design elements — especially Indian craft and detailing — can come together to form a cohesive, personality-driven interior.

The First Look: Intentional Chaos, Layered Stories
The first thing that caught our eye — and refused to let go — was the lighting. Suspended from the double-height ceiling was a hypnotic installation of swirling fabric skirts, slowly rotating like a garba performance in motion. These oversized forms resembled colourful ghaghras, animated in gentle circles, crafted with detailed textures that made the movement feel alive. This wasn’t just decorative lighting — it was kinetic art. Directly below, a gigantic chandelier took center stage above the main table. Around it, deep-toned sofas with bold upholstery anchored the space, their shapes reflecting the organic flow above. Sculptures of varying sizes punctuated the layout, while layered wall art framed the room. One wall featured a mural of a snake, its curving form adding a deliberate rhythm — part of the overall narrative that guided the design language throughout.

As we moved further into the other areas of the store, we noticed the Tribal Daybed Sofa — low, deep-seated, and upholstered in a rich, textured fabric filled with colourful floral embroidery. It was placed gracefully in front of the staircase, right between two key sections of the store. Its placement made it a natural pause point — a spot from where you could take in the openness of the space and the movement around it.

Continuing through the space, we came across a bold metal-embossed bar counter — centrally placed and impossible to miss — paired with the Wooden Standing Yali wall sculpture (labelled ‘One of One’) that added a sense of sculptural weight to the wall. The outdoor section featured a striking metal horse sculpture, set against an electric blue backdrop that created a vibrant visual contrast. Whether lounging, dining, or stepping into the outdoors, you’re constantly surrounded by colour and crafted detail.

Meet the Force Behind It: Shabnam Gupta

If you’ve followed Indian design in the last two decades, you already know her name. Shabnam Gupta, founder of The Orange Lane, has designed for actors, musicians, restaurants, and spaces that defy definition. Her signature? Visual storytelling that blends bold colour, heritage motifs, and unexpected detailing.

Her design journey started at the L.S. Raheja School of Architecture in 1994. After stints with architect Tushar Desai and a brief foray into film production, she founded her own studio in 2003. Since then, she’s created homes and commercial spaces that feel highly personal but still globally relevant.

Peacock Life, originally a design brand and furniture label, has evolved into a fully immersive experience. This Karjat outpost is its latest (and most ambitious) extension, combining retail, styling, and hospitality into one setting.

Design Meets Stay: The Boutique Home Next Door

Sharing the same land as the store is Peacock Life Living, a boutique vacation home that carries the same maximalist, story-driven design language. Visitors can stay overnight and experience what it feels like to live in a space designed with this much intent.

It’s styled like a personal home, with curated rooms, vintage furniture, and textured walls. The outdoor areas are built for slow living — reading on the charpoy, lounging near the firepit, or walking through the garden. It’s quiet, but not minimal. Designed, but not stiff. You feel like a guest, not a customer.

Whether you’re visiting for design, a staycation, or both, this is the kind of place that leaves an impression.

BONAFIDE’s Take

We appreciate a space that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Peacock Life is very clear on what it is: maximalist, story-led, and confident in its visual language. That clarity is rare.

It’s not just about over-the-top design. There’s thought behind the layers. There’s structure in the chaos. It may not be for everyone, but for those looking to add emotion and identity to their spaces, this will strike a chord.

So if you’re looking for your next design fix, want a weekend that’s not another resort, or just need a little visual shake-up — Karjat might surprise you. And this showroom? It might just change the way you think about home.

Design isn’t always about function. Sometimes, it’s about feeling something — and here, you do. Erected on Shabnam’s unwavering belief that ‘design is for everyone,’ it reflects exactly that.

Home Decor

Maximalism
More is more. Layers on layers. Zero beige. All drama.

Kinetic Art
Art that moves. Literally. Not metaphorically. And definitely not quietly.

Peacock Life
Not just a brand. A lifestyle choice for the design-brave.

Mood Lighting with a Backstory
Those swirling ghaghras from the ceiling? Part lighting, part performance art. Less showroom, more slow-motion festivals.

Snake on the Wall, No Panic Required
Not a design risk—it’s a design rhythm. The serpent mural isn’t slithering. It’s storytelling in curves.

Sofa or Sculpture? Yes
Every seating piece looks like it could walk a runway. Embroidery, scale, placement—none of it’s casual.

Tribal Daybed = Official Pause Spot
Perfect for a breather. Even better for people-watching with style.

Boutique Home, Not a BnB
Next-door staycation spot that feels more like crashing at your artsy friend’s estate than a rental.

Vintage, but Not Dusty
The home mixes heirloom energy with curated confidence. Think charpoys with character, not Pinterest copies.

Shabnam Built This World
You’re not just walking through a showroom. You’re walking through her worldview—unapologetic, rooted, and fully designed.
